Johanna understands the challenges and pressures that come with being a SLP Student, New Graduate/Early career clinician, speech pathologist returning to the field or expanding to a new area of practice. Johanna is passionate about supporting clinicians and sharing knowledge with a focus on evidence-based practice and self-care/mental health. Johanna believes that through supporting the speech pathology profession and clinicians, stronger connections and collective growth occurs yielding higher therapeutic gains and wellbeing for our clients and wider community.
Johanna is registered with Speech Pathology Australia as a Mentor to support Speech and Language Pathologists in professional development and clinical practice. At Communico Speech Language and Swallowing Therapy, we also provides clinical supervision to early career clinicians and clinicians returning to practice. Being up to date with the latest evidence and expanding skillsets to support a growing caseload is essential to delivering ethical and evidence based practice as well as maintaining the credentials of a certified practicing speech and language pathologist.
We actively take part in regular peer support as a mode to maintain connections with the speech pathology community. This is of great value with an increasing number of individual practitioners and many practitioners working remotely. It is a great way to share knowledge and support, discuss clinical cases, and discuss current issues facing our field of practice. At Communico Speech Language and Swallowing Therapy, we welcome speech pathologists in the community to join.
Student placements can be challenging... Learning about and then executing therapy approaches, service deliveries, scopes of practice, client presentations, assessment plans and therapy plans… all while being critiqued against competencies… It’s a lot and can make the small things like remembering staff names, office procedures, finding the office printer or even a place to park seem so exhausting! Johanna takes a calm approach to guiding SLP students through their clinical placements. Offering support where needed in an easily digestible way that suits the learning style of the student. Johanna sees value in being transparent with students every step of the way and really giving SLP students a go to practice their skills, fill in their knowledge gaps and reach their career potential. Johanna also sees this as a great opportunity for SLP students to discover what areas of practice and workplaces they are passionate about, which is essential in later career satisfaction.
Our speech therapy materials and speech assessments are available for hire for local SLPs. This is subject to availability, assessment copyright and credentials held by the clinician. Please get in touch for more information.
